The Social Model of Disability and Deaf Identity

  • Mickey Fellowes has been a disability and deaf equality trainer since 1998.
  • Sunsurfer believes that an understanding of the Social Model of Disability and Deaf Identity can be a life changing experience for disabled or deaf people.
  • If non disabled people understand and work to the Social Model they will effectively remove many of the barriers and discrimination that disabled people face.

Disability equality training for public sector organisations

Our major customers are public sector organisations such as local and national government, housing associations, Police and arts organisations such as Manchester Museum, Arts About Manchester, the Imperial War Museum and the Cornerhouse Cinema.

We work mostly in the North West but also across the whole of the UK.  Recent training has taken place in London, Manchester, Bradford and Colchester.

“I’m just back from annual leave and wanted to say thank you for the training sessions you have run at the museum over the past month.

I have had a huge amount of positive feedback from the team, who felt that the sessions were accessible and inclusive.  As a manager it has enabled me to rethink the induction for our team and to consider the ongoing training needs for the team.  I feel I could more confidently discuss issues of access and customer service as a result too.”

Hearfirst’s Disability Equality Training package developed by Ash Gavin and Julie Ryder is the best disability equality training he has experienced.  This is not passive learning but adult workshop style training that involves the skills and experiences of all participants. Effective disability equality training for public sector organisations makes a real difference to the lives of disabled people.
